Conference Overview

In the face of constructing processes in new scenarios and the renewal of paradigms experienced by today’s global society – those recorded in the imaginations that design the urban future – the challenge to renew conceptual structures and technological applications has been the main approach at the International Conferences “City and Virtual Territory” held in Barcelona (2004), Concepcion (2005) and Bilbao (2006). In these conferences an important number of papers developed by researchers, professionals, specialized companies and renowned institutions were presented. These works had an impact, giving pertinence to the urban-territorial upgrades that incorporate qualitative indexes to achieve sustainability, using and incorporating information technologies and resources currently available to complete surveys, projects and actions.

This guideline is the result of the awareness achieved by different institutions and specialists who deal with the complex effects produced by the rapid occupation of territories, urban growth and an active metropolization, specially its effects throughout modern history. The irrational exploitation of nature and its consequences on the sustainability scenario, the negative and positive impacts of the globalization process as well as recognizing the unfair allocation of wealth that worsens the poverty experienced by the majority of the world population are challenges that add to the societies and cultures of the world.

These issues have opened a forum for interesting debates focused on the application of new information and communication technologies to the study of architectonic, urban, territory regulation, environmental, community participation and government issues. Special attention has been paid to the breakthroughs in Global Positioning Systems, spatial analysis technologies, remote sensing and the creation of three-dimensional models for the analysis of spatial contexts, proposing ideas, study cases and innovative methodologies.

It is also worth mentioning the promotion given to network configurations that imply a better use of the institutional strengths and expertise, in the most significant future sense and trend for the distribution of knowledge, its results and application, to achieve a better society in this world. In this perspective we are proposing to continue this joint effort and create a wide meeting point for all those who seek solutions to the problem of the urban-territorial development with social equity, maintaining our environment, promoting the participation of citizens – with its democratic consequences – and the possibility to find better ways to draw a future with quality for our cities and their inhabitants as well as all those things that may become positive contributions to face the challenge of territorial linking and the scenarios for the 21st century.

With the purpose of continuing with this process, the Centro Universitario de Arte, Arquitectura y Diseño (University Center of Arts, Architecture and Design) of the University of Guadalajara, with the participation in this important effort of a significant group of public and private institutions from different countries
